On the night of December 6th, 2011, G-Star RAW was the first denim brand to open a store on the famous Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. The store was officially opened by G-Star’s brand new campaign model, fast rising French actress Clémence Poésy and internationally music producer and DJ Mark Ronson.

Just before the store was officially opened Shubhankar Ray, G-Star’s Global brand director, introduced Clémence Poésy as the new campaign face of G-Star. G-Star is proud to work with the internationally recognised and fast rising French actress as she reflects the characteristic brand DNA: she is a confident, strong and in control woman without compromising her femininity.

The launch of the Rodeo Drive store brings G-Star’s core DNA to life, presenting cutting-edge talents from across the creative world coming together for this special event. During the store opening G-Star also presented for the first time the Pop-up Show, a mini fashion show with live models performing in the shop window, transforming a static window into real live interaction.

I was unable to attend one of my favorite women’s denim line, GOLDSIGN, at the RON HERMAN store in Los Angeles last for Fashion Night OUT  BUT i heard it was AMAZE-BALL’S! Founder and Creative Director, Adriano Goldschmied, greeted guests while they shopped and waited in line for an intimate astrology and tarot card reading.  GOLDSIGN’s US Exclusive “Misfit” slim leg corduroy’s in “Pumpkin” were available for purchase amongst a variety of other denim styles and the first 20 people to buy a pair of jeans received a limited edition GOLDSIGN makeup bag.

Last week I along with 7 other international editors were invited to see the recently opened  first Scotch & Soda Amsterdams Blauw denim-only store, which houses the complete denim collection for men and women. The new store is located at the Berenstraat in the Jordaan area in Amsterdam, comparable to Le Marais in Paris or Soho in New York. This is the place where Amsterdams Blauw was born and raised, so it was an easy choice to establish the first denim store here. ‘De Jordaan’ is unique for its warm and friendly vibe, a distinct quarter within the city centre where you escape the fast-paced city life to catch breath. Scotch & Soda’s denim-deli is the kind of place where you drop by, relax, enjoy a good coffee, have a chat and immerse yourself with beautiful products.

The store is set in a monumental Amsterdam building with a historical wooden facade, painted head-to-toe in the signature Amsterdams Blauw blue colour. The interior is fresh and white, with rich materials like hand-made tiles, an antique wooden castle floor, brick walls and historically ornamented ceilings. The fitting rooms are a tongue-in-cheek remake of the classic Amsterdam urinals you’ll see in the streets.

FINALLY a good store opening in my part of the woods! Pro skateboarding icon and DVS Shoe Company co-founder Tim Gavin (alongside friends and fellow DVS employees Jim Leatherman and Juston Tucker) has opened a new store in Long Beach, CA called PORT. With more than three decades of combined experience in the footwear and action sports apparel industry, PORT is the collective expression of the thirty-something trio’s slightly more mature, yet still fun-loving taste for fashion, friendship and hi jinx.

This group of like-minded buddies had a clear vision for their new post-skate concept shop and private label brand. Located on the city’s bustling Broadway Avenue strip, PORT houses a range of established and emerging lifestyle brands including Insight, Brixton, The Quiet Life, Clae, Fresh Jive, WOR, Chambers, Publish, Pointer, Hershel and more. Adding to the rapid development and cool factor of Brookyn’s Atlantic Avenue is the new(ish) men’s specialty store Goose Barnacle. The small—but very well-edited—shop carries some great lines: Taylor Supply, Svensson, Naked & Famous, Sebago, and Wigwam socks. Taking full advantage of the space, GB also doubles as an art gallery and will have rotating fine art exhibitions as the seasons progress.

Over the Rainbow is one of the largest independent retail boutiques in Canada specializing in premium denim. The store began in 1975 with one salesman (owner  Joel Carman) and one alterationist making custom jeans for every customer. Celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, Over the Rainbow now occupies over 4,500 square feet of comfortable shopping space, while housing over 250 different styles of blue jeans for men and women. In this immense variety you will find everything from opening price denim (Cheap Monday, Levi’s Red Tab, [Blank]) to mid-range premium (DL1961, 34 Heritage) to high-end designer jeans (Citizens of Humanity, Hudson Jeans, Paige Premium Denim).

The store has not forgotten about the denimheads; customers who appreciate the finer elements of how denim is crafted and worn. Over the Rainbow also carries purist brands such as Edwin Jeans, Naked & Famous Denim, Triple Works Japan and PRPS, all offering the best in Japanese-made product with an American heritage influence. Aside from the amount of denim in the shop, the focus of Over the Rainbow has always been customer service, employing over 30 salespeople to help guide customers towards the best fitting jean. And for any problem areas of the jean, an in-house alterations service offers everything from original hemming to tapered inseams to maternity panels.

If that wasn’t enough, Joel sent his own son Daniel to work in a denim factory for three months (documented in an online journal series entitled The Art of Denim) while his daughter Amy worked on the denim production side for Paige Premium Denim in Los Angeles. In 2011, Over the Rainbow is planning to add to its strong assortment with refreshingly new brands like Denham the Jeanmaker and Wrangler Blue Bell.
