Interview with Paige Adams-Geller of Paige Denim

First, Can you give our readers a little background on the brand?
The brand was born July 1, 2004. I started Paige Denim because I was at a place in my life where I needed to find my purpose. I have always loved working with young girls to help them build self-esteem and self-confidence
What inspired you to become a denim designer?
I love empowering women and working directly with people in general. With that being said, when I look at a body, for me it is all about lines, angles, and proportions which is why I was very successful as a fit model and design consultant. I worked for many of the top denim brands in the world and realized there was a need for a woman designer, where it has typically been a very male dominated industry. I had a vision of what I thought women would want in the fit of a jean and a passion for fashion. I felt I had a fresh, female perspective that I could bring to the denim world.
How did you come up with the name?
I came up with all kinds of silly names in the beginning and then something clicked. It had to be called Paige Denim so that I could be the spokesperson for the brand and build an emotional connection with my consumer.
What keeps you wanting to design?
I am fascinated by denim. I love the versatility – denim can be worn practically anywhere at any time. There are so many ways to style and wear it. The creativity is endless, especially due to all of the modern innovations in fabric. I love pushing the envelope and thinking of things that are not the norm in the industry. It brings me great joy to see how happy someone is when they find a perfect pair of jeans.
Being a denim designer must be hard. Trying to “re-invent†denim season after season is a challenge in itself. What is your inspiration process like for each season?
Part of my design process involves shoes. I am obsessed with shoes and have a desire to keep designing jeans that look great with the new shoes I have …or any new pieces in my wardrobe for that matter! If I see a need for something missing in the market, I try to find my way of bringing it into fruition.
More specifically, Fall 2010 was inspired by a blend of aggressive and feminine influences. For example, the collection includes tough details mixed with lace, zippers on soft stretch fabrics, and dramatic finishes on clean skinnies. I concentrated on how to take the hard edge masculine and rock n’ roll looks and soften them, just a little, to make them more feminine and accessible.
Spring 2011 was inspired by a mixture of 90′s influence with a Bohemian ease and flowy feel. The collection combines the best of both worlds – sleek lines in slim silhouettes and relaxed/easy silhouette. The pieces have pretty and feminine details, but also a California chic/chilled out tomboy aesthetic. Spring 2011 is defined by the climate in the spring months – cool and bright
What are you denim predictions for the next 18months for both men and women?
Denim predictions for both men and women is variety…anything goes! Super stretch fabrics continue to evolve and while classic denim looks and feels are equally important. Non-denim fabrics also continue to become more and more important in denim like silhouettes.
What makes Paige Denim different from every other denim line out there?
Paige Denim is different than any line out there because we are known for having the best butt jean in the business. No matter your personal style preference, we have fit the jean so that it is flattering on your derriere. We are also a fashion denim brand that is able to be on the cutting edge of fashion and still have an amazing basic 5 pocket business.
Where do you see the brand at in 5 years?
I see the brand as an International lifestyle brand that is successful in a broad range of products.
Part of what thedenimguy.com is to give readers an understanding about denim and who the denim players are. I would love to share with the readers some things about who PAIGE is…
Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Wasilla, Alaska.
What is a typical workday like for you?
A typical work day for me is that I wake up at 6:00am and take my dogs outside. Then I go through e-mails and read highlights from the newspaper and trade publications while I drink my coffee. After a quick work out, I drive to the office while calling our New York and Los Angeles showrooms to touch base. When I get into the office, we usually have fittings for production and new development. Next, I go over sales reports domestically and internationally. I usually eat lunch at my desk while going through more e-mails. Late afternoons consist of fabric meetings, design meetings, approving wash standards, and trying on final production before it ships to make sure it fits perfectly!
If I’m on the road, as I often am, my days are filled with press interviews, meetings with buyers, and making personal appearances to have hands on connection with my customer.
What are you hobbies? Do you like to collect thing? Sports? Traveler?
I love music. I love to sing and used to have my own band. Listening to live music is my favorite form of entertainment. Traveling is right up there as well. Learning about different cultures is so fascinating to me.
For serenity and peace I love being out in nature. Since I’m from Alaska I need to get out to the mountains to take in the fresh air or just get on a beautiful day to hike. Most of the time, I have a strong desire to be near lakes, streams, and waterfalls since I grew up near on a lake.
I do like to collect shoes and I would collect puppies if I could! But I adore spending time with those I love. I have been blessed with AMAZING friends!
Favorite book?
My favorite book is Dry by Augusten Burroughs. He is hilarious and witty.
Favorite movie?
I can watch “Notting Hill” a million times and never get bored. Also I must say “Avatar” was an experience beyond words. And what can I say – I love Mafia movies…all of them!
Favorite Band/Musician?
My favorite musicians are Kings of Leon, Pink, Gwen Stefani, No Doubt, Matchbox 20, Ray La Montagne, Keith Urban and Lady Antebellum.
Favorite food?
My favorite foods are Indian, Japanese, and Italian. I have to have Greek yogurt with honey in the morning. I can’t live without hummus and am addicted to Kombucha lately!
