A GIRL IN HER TWENTIES: What to wear to an interview?

Interviews are one of those life experiences that we can love and hate all at the same time.  Getting a call for an interview for a job you really want (or REALLY need) can be thrilling.  But the act of sitting in a room, shamelessly selling yourself to strangers is unnatural and therefore pretty damn uncomfortable.  For most of us, that is.

But, it’s just one of those things everyone has to endure.  For me, I always stress about what to wear.  Like it or not, your appearance is the first (in person) impression the potential employer gets.  I’m a firm believer that you can find an appropriate outfit in almost any store, without spending the money you probably don’t have.  Hey, we’re young.  We’re supposed to be broke, right?

I know I have been horrified while browsing the suit section at most department stores.  Synthetic fabrics, matronly cuts, shoulder pads.  Gross, gross, and grosser.  It can be a truly frustrating and spirit breaking experience.  You think to yourself “I wouldn’t hire me in that disgusting suit, and I want to puke at the thought of spending my cocktail money on that mess.”  Ok, so maybe that’s just me, but you know where I’m going with this.

So, step one to keeping your lunch where it belongs and finding an outfit that makes you feel like the young professional badass I know you are is finding an outfit that is you.  Maybe a more polished version of you, but nonetheless, you.  This can be as simple as a flower pinned to your blazer, a great watch, or a necklace that doesn’t look like it was lifted out of your Mom’s old jewelry box.  PUT THE PEARLS DOWN.

Secondly, we have fit.  If you have to tailor it, tailor it.  The money you’d usually spend on a glass Pinot Noir is far better spent at the tailor, because your interviewers won’t be sipping on enough wine to make that frumpy skirt look good.  Employers always want someone who pays attention to detail, so where better to display that attribute than in your clothes?

And last, don’t let yourself get trapped in a box.  You aren’t REQUIRED to wear a suit.  Nice bottoms (skirt or pants) and a great top (think in color here) can be great.  Even a dress can be fabulous.  Don’t be afraid to go into stores that you’d normally never shop in.  There are hidden gems everywhere, I tell ya.  Here are a few suggestions to get you walking into any interview feeling like you own the place.

The “Kollete” skirt by Kate Spade, retails for $295, is a great piece to invest in (if you can) because it is classic, young, and has just enough detailing to make it stand out a little.  Kate Spade has so many unique pieces that would be interview appropriate, if you can afford it.  If you ever need help justifying an expensive purchase, just give me a call.  You’ll be at the register in no time.

For those of you who are preparing for those post-grad interviews, Ann Taylor offers 20% off of every purchase until you graduate, and even offers suggestions for interview looks on their website.  Ann Taylor makes some cute, wearable pieces that work well in a young professional’s wardrobe.  And who doesn’t love 20% off?

That is an outfit to love.   For around $200 (less if you’re still a student) you can have this outfit (sans shoes).  A blazer would be a great addition if you’re in a more corporate setting.

And last, never under estimate Forever 21.  This place will be your BFF if you’ll let it.  Actually, my BFF won’t even let me borrow her jewelry for less than a 20 spot (or a margarita).

Think chic, simple, and timeless.  And for the love of God, don’t pick anything that clanks.   I even gave a little somethin’ somethin’ to those of you who feel compelled to break out the pearls.  $7.80 and $5.80 respectively.

So there you have it girls.  That job is in the bag.  Don’t be afraid to think outside the box, just don’t leave the box in your dust.  I wish you all the best of luck, dry palms, and happy paychecks.  Oh, and watch for skeezy bosses and co-workers.  You’re going to be looking good, they almost won’t be able to help themselves.

Xoxo
